IRON MAN 70.3 | Mexico Half Triathlon

Iron Man Los Cabos. One of the most extreme sports event: a swim in the surroundings of Playa Palmilla, a vivid bike ride between the desert and the ocean and a challenging flat race course with the great weather conditions that only Los Cabos could offer

“Be true to the game, because the game will be true to you. If you try to shortcut the game, then the game will shortcut you. If you put forth the effort, good things will be bestowed upon you. That's truly about the game, and in some ways that's about life too.”

That is a quote from Michael Jordan, one of my idols for being an extraordinary reference in sports, and damn, I think he's right! I greatly admire the athletes. I'm not sure it's because I consider myself a washed up sportsman :-) and when I see that people give their best effort in a competition, I feel that they are heroes for me to achieve something extremely challenging (I think I never ran in my life more than 10 miles! LOL). Or maybe it's just because I love seeing people achieve their goals and when they reach the finish goal I feel very good for them. Can you imagine the effort training a whole year to perform at its best in a few hours of competition? ... Remarkable indeed!

The Iron Man 70.3 Los Cabos (or half triathlon) is a mix between three different disciplines: 1.2 miles swimming, 56 miles biking, and 13.1 miles marathon. This give us the total amount of 70.3 miles, which gives the name to the event.

And there is also another type of Iron Man 140.6, which is the exactly double of miles in any of the three disciplines... OMG, I can not even imagine that kind of effort!

Now I want to share with you some photos I took for the Iron Man 70.3 Los Cabos (November 2018). Not that I am a passionate follower of Iron Man in general, I just enjoy sports, I love photography, and it happens that this exciting competition is celebrated every year in the city where I live ... An extraordinary opportunity to have a very fun shooting day, right?

I started shooting around 6:30 am, when all the athletes were warming-up and also preparing everything they would need for the three stages of the competition, because each athlete is responsible for preparing their own bike, food, beverages and general accessories that they will use during the event.

Swimming in the Sea of Cortez

After swimming 1.2 miles, they go directly to their bicycles to start the second stage and of course they have no time to waste. When they go out of the sea, they quickly manage their logistics (in the shortest possible time, according to their experience and goals) at their "bike station" and after a few minutes they jump on the bike for the next phase.

—You are your only limit.

I saw people prepared with a small superfunctional small shoulder bag to start the bike course after 30 seconds since they arrived at the bike station, without any rest at all. And I also saw people take a few minutes to prepare their bag, take a moment to breathe, put on a waterproof sunscreen, get hydrated and eat some magic bar, before rushing to ride the next 56 miles. There are all kinds of personal goals as well as health conditions, and also different ages among the participants. I insist, a remarkable experience for all!

The final phase with the flat race is probably when the public has a greater opportunity to see more closely the effort of the triathletes and even accompany them for a few moments while giving them encouragement and cheers.

The winner of the 2018 edition was Sam Appleton

The Australian Professional Triathlete finished in 03h:48”:43” an striking time for me. My most sincerely congratulations to him and all the courageous participants, volunteers, families and organizers. I had a great time among all of you!
